The David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center (“DSZ Center”) located in the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey opened in 2007 and is the first hospital in central and southern New Jersey dedicated to providing a full spectrum of comprehensive services to treat benign and malignant tumors originating in the brain and spinal cord, as well as neurological complications of cancer that has spread to other regions of the body. In addition to offering cutting-edge and specialized treatment, the DSZ Center offers support programs for patients, caregivers and families of patients who are undergoing treatment for CNS cancers or who have suffered loss of a loved one.
The DSZ Center was named in honor of David S. Zocchi, who lost an almost six-year battle with brain cancer in 2005. Dr. Sumul N. Raval, a neurologist and neuro-oncologist, treated Dave for the last year of his life. Dr. Raval had long envisioned establishing a regional brain tumor center in central New Jersey to help spare patients the long and uncomfortable rides to treatment centers in New York City and Philadelphia. Dave’s wife, Judy, knew first-hand the need for support of not only patients, but caregivers and loved ones, privately struggling with their own fear and grief, while selflessly providing care and support to their loved one. Ms. Zocchi envisioned a center with a calming environment and support programs designed to reduce isolation by helping caregivers express and share their day to day journey.
Together, Dr. Raval and Ms. Zocchi realized their dream of establishing a state-of-the-art brain tumor center to bring cutting edge care, peace of mind, here at home.
